And few streets capture that evolution as well as Calle de Alcal\u00e1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Following its route from central Madrid to the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas<\/strong> means taking in some of the capital\u2019s most iconic sights: Puerta del Sol, the Metr\u00f3polis Building, Cibeles, Puerta de Alcal\u00e1, the Retiro area and, as a grand finale, the Neo-Mud\u00e9jar architecture of Las Ventas.<\/p>\n

For many international visitors, it\u2019s one of the first places they see in the city. But instead of heading towards Plaza Mayor or the Royal Palace, this time we\u2019ll go in a different direction: east, following Calle de Alcal\u00e1. <\/p>\n

This change of course lets you discover a different Madrid.<\/p>\n

In just a few minutes, the narrow streets of the centre give way to grand buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a great way to understand that Madrid\u2019s tourist heritage isn\u2019t concentrated only around Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace or the Paseo del Prado.<\/p>\n

Madrid stretches far beyond that.<\/p>\n

2. The Metr\u00f3polis Building and Madrid\u2019s grand avenues<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the first major landmarks appears at the intersection of Calle de Alcal\u00e1 and Gran V\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Here you\u2019ll find the Metr\u00f3polis Building<\/strong>, at number 39 on Alcal\u00e1, one of the most photographed architectural icons in central Madrid. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is a great place to stop and look around.<\/p>\n

Gran V\u00eda stretches out towards Plaza de Espa\u00f1a, while Calle de Alcal\u00e1 continues downhill towards Cibeles.<\/p>\n

3. Cibeles: one of Madrid\u2019s great stages<\/span><\/h2>\n

While many travellers know its famous fountain, it\u2019s worth taking in the whole architectural ensemble around the square.<\/p>\n

The Palacio de Cibeles is one of Madrid\u2019s most recognisable buildings and today, in addition to municipal offices, it houses cultural spaces and a viewpoint. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But Cibeles also has a special importance within our route.<\/p>\n

Up to this point we\u2019ve crossed the urban Madrid of grand avenues. From here on, we move towards one of the capital\u2019s great monumental green spaces: the Retiro area. <\/p>\n

The transition happens once again along Calle de Alcal\u00e1.<\/p>\n

4. Puerta de Alcal\u00e1: when this area was Madrid\u2019s entrance<\/span><\/h2>\n

Puerta de Alcal\u00e1<\/strong> wasn\u2019t always surrounded by traffic, hotels, restaurants and urban buildings.<\/p>\n

There was a time when it truly was a gateway into Madrid.<\/p>\n

The current structure was commissioned by Charles III, designed by Francesco Sabatini and inaugurated in 1778. It was part of the old royal gates that allowed entry into the city. Its name comes from the road that led to Alcal\u00e1 de Henares. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That detail completely changes the way you look at it.<\/p>\n

When a traveller stands in front of Puerta de Alcal\u00e1 and keeps walking towards Las Ventas, in a way they\u2019re following the old road out of Madrid to the east.<\/p>\n

5. A stop in El Retiro before continuing to Las Ventas<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you have a few hours to spare, it\u2019s well worth going into El Retiro.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to cover the whole park.<\/p>\n

You can take a short walk through some of its best-known areas and then return to Calle de Alcal\u00e1 to continue on to Las Ventas.<\/p>\n

The Great Pond, the Monument to Alfonso XII, the Crystal Palace, or simply its tree-lined avenues let you completely change the atmosphere before returning to the urban route. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That combination is one of the route\u2019s biggest draws.<\/p>\n

In a single day you can go from the historic centre to grand avenues, visit one of Madrid\u2019s most important parks, and end by discovering a monumental bullring from the inside.<\/p>\n

6. An architectural clue before reaching Las Ventas<\/span><\/h2>\n

When you return to Calle de Alcal\u00e1, you\u2019ll find a detail that\u2019s especially interesting for understanding our final destination.<\/p>\n

At the former Escuelas Aguirre<\/strong>, now the headquarters of Casa \u00c1rabe, you\u2019ll see one of Madrid\u2019s examples of Neo-Mud\u00e9jar architecture.<\/p>\n

The building was inaugurated in 1886, and its ornamentation is a great introduction to a style that had a strong presence in Madrid between the late 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why is it worth paying attention to?<\/p>\n

Because further on we\u2019ll find a monumental expression of that same architectural language.<\/p>\n

Las Ventas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this way, the route gains a second thread.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re no longer just moving geographically through Madrid. We\u2019re also travelling through different architectural styles. <\/p>\n

From the neoclassicism of Puerta de Alcal\u00e1 we move to Neo-Mud\u00e9jar, an architectural style characterised by the use of brick, arches and many decorative elements inspired by Spain\u2019s Mud\u00e9jar tradition.<\/p>\n

7. From monumental Madrid to everyday Madrid<\/span><\/h2>\n

As you continue along Alcal\u00e1 towards Goya and Manuel Becerra, the scenery changes.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s part of what makes this route interesting.<\/p>\n

The great monumental settings gradually give way to shopping areas, residential buildings, caf\u00e9s and neighbourhoods where everyday Madrid life unfolds.<\/p>\n

For a tourist it may seem less spectacular than Cibeles or Puerta de Alcal\u00e1, but it reveals something important: Madrid is not only its historic centre.<\/p>\n

This part of the route shows a living city.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019d rather not walk the entire route, you can use the metro for the final stretches. Ventas station is served by lines 2 and 5<\/strong>, and line 2 is especially convenient from different points along this central axis of Madrid. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But if you still have the energy, it\u2019s worth keeping on foot.<\/p>\n

8. Las Ventas: the route\u2019s great architectural surprise<\/span><\/h2>\n

And finally we arrive at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas<\/strong>, at number 237 on Calle de Alcal\u00e1.<\/p>\n

Even for those who know nothing about bullfighting, the first impression is mainly architectural.<\/p>\n

Exposed brick.<\/p>\n

Arches.<\/p>\n

Ceramics.<\/p>\n

Towers.<\/p>\n

Tiles.<\/p>\n

Grand entrances.<\/p>\n

A structure designed to hold tens of thousands of spectators.<\/p>\n

The bullring was initially designed by architect Jos\u00e9 Espeli\u00fa and completed by Manuel Mu\u00f1oz Monasterio. It was inaugurated in 1931 and is one of Madrid\u2019s great examples of Neo-Mud\u00e9jar architecture. Its arena is approximately 60 m in diameter and it can hold more than 23,000 spectators. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1994 it has been listed as a Bien de Inter\u00e9s Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in the category of Historic-Artistic Monument. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One possible plan is to start in the morning at Puerta del Sol, walk along Alcal\u00e1 to Cibeles, continue to Puerta de Alcal\u00e1, take a short detour into El Retiro, and then carry on to Las Ventas.<\/p>\n

Once there, you can take the cultural visit of the bullring and the Bullfighting Museum.<\/p>\n
